What is design for? A larger and larger part of the design world is finding a meaning to design beyond mere styling and features. Design becomes an ally of problem solving for issues on every level. [See also the Pro Dialogue on Resources & Design.]
Culture is also a force that can be increasingly used for good – rather than simply appropriated to be sold. Using culture to define and pattern projects for enterprise and social development is increasingly understood as the best way to get something – anything – done, and create (locally-specific) value in the process.
Cecilia Hertz, CEO
of Umbilical Design, which takes aerospace design knowledge and applies it to terrestrial problems, and Magdalena Jennstål, of Hungerprojketet, which exploits the richness of culture in its
programs to reduce poverty and hunger, will elaborate these themes with the participants of the Pro Dialogue.
